Zanbato’s Equal-Weighted Index, which tracks secondary market performance of ZX’s most actively traded companies, fell 9.2% in May. The index is down 28.3% YTD, having seen 16 consecutive months of declines. In comparison, Aerospace/ Defense sector was up 2.3% YTD, AI/ Machine Learning was down 21.7% YTD, Crypto/ Blockchain was down 40.5% YTD, Cybersecurity was down 17.2% YTD and FinTech was down 37.9% YTD.
As seen in the graph, “Fintech and Crypto have been the most impacted. For one, public comp equity values and multiples are down 30-70%, and two, many companies have underperformed previously lofty expectations. 2022 was a regime shift from growth at all costs to now profitable growth, with many business models being put under the microscope, refined and spending curtailed” said Ian Coffman, Director of Portfolio Valuation and Fund Advisory at Houlihan Lokey.
ZX’s average bid-ask spread was 25% in May, 10% higher than the 12-month average. The recent trend can be attributed mainly to the emergence of two-sided markets in numerous new companies that have remained relatively inactive in the past year. Among the top 50 most active companies, the average bid-ask spread of ZX decreased to 8% in May, down from 9% in the previous month.
Bids represented 40% of submitted tickets on ZX in May, a 6% increase from the 12-month average of 34%.
SpaceX, Databricks and Instacart were the three most active companies on ZX in May.
On average, the ZX Index Values for May showed a 31% decrease compared to the last round price per share. However, for companies that completed their last financing round in 2022 or later, their ZX Index Values experienced an average decrease of 24% compared to the last round. The declines in secondary market pricing were in most cases much steeper than the price declines relative to companies’ last rounds of financing, due to many companies trading at premiums to last round pricing in 2021.
